Dr Mensah discusses Internet Of things with SMES in South Africa

World renowned inventor of Fiber Optics and Nanotechnology expert Dr Thomas Mensah lectures Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in South Africa on new devices for the IOT (Internet of Things Space) for the growth of their businesses.

According to the author of the book ‘The Right Stuff comes in Black too’ and Nanotechnology Commercialization, he was in South Africa as a VIP Speaker at the Tech Innovation Center in Johannesburg when he was invited by the Premier of Gauteng when they met in New York six months ago in September, 2017.

Speaking to  Dr Mensah said the Entrepreneurs were very fascinated to have an expert like him come to their Innovation Hub and have a lecture. “They were intrigued to have one of the Co-Inventors of Fiber Optics and world Expert in Nanotechnology come and demonstrate the latest developments in IOT (Internet of Things  Technology)”.

At the lecture he spoke about Artificial Intelligence and Augmented Reality in the IOT Environment, which are critical for Controlling Driverless Cars in the Future. “Advanced Sensors on High Ways that help Cars maneuver around other cars as well as dealing with highway traffic including anticipating movement of other cars with regard to lane changes”.

Dr Mensah also discussed migration of IOT (Internet Of Things) into the home environment for the control of home appliances, entertainment centers, Music players, Video Games, etc. The Technology which include a Smart Watch that controls home appliances like Television Sets, the Smart Watch has three sensors including a Gyroscope, Inertial navigaton System, that when paired with the Smart Phone, Android and Apple phones can easily increase and lower volume of songs by hand gestures as well as change Television Channels.

Speaking to Dr Mensah he said the responses from the SMEs were impressive “they asked a lot of questions on how to introduce a new product based on new technology into the Market place. They were interested in how to file Patents and protect their Intellectual Property. And how to scale from making lower quantities to manufacturing million devices.”

Dr. Mensah discussed several applications in the IOT environment outside the Home including Healthcare Facilities and Hospitals, Military and Defense Applications, Factories.

The Entrepreneurs posed questions on Intellectual Property Protection, Patents, etc. raising Capital, and managing growth of their businesses.

He will also set up and launch the Silicon Valley of South Africa in the Innovation Hubs in South Africa. This Silicon Valley of South Africa will have Business Accelerators and Business Incubators that will focus on challenges facing South Africa. Gauteng has a GDP of 10% of Africa and can widen this Economic leadership further using Modern Advanced Technology and Innovation to create New Industries in South Africa. This will propel South Africa to the top in Global Affairs, especially in Job creation, Industrial Innovation and Economic Leadership
