Why you Need to be on LinkedIn as a Graduate

Essentially the dream and wish of every student are to get a job. But most of us (writing as a student) do not even know how powerful LinkedIn is.

Do you even know what the heck Linkedin is? NO. But here is what you need to know about the valuable tool that would help you get your dream career job or project started.

What is LinkedIn?

LinkedIn is a decade old and has 225 million members, its fastest-growing demographic –30 million and counting—is students and those who are three years or less out of college.

LinkedIn is your professional face to the business world as a graduate or a student. It is not like Facebook or YouTube. Don’t post goofy pictures, be silly, or say inappropriate things. Put your best foot forward. It’s a professional platform that you create your own personal branding and this is your sales letter (about you) to future employers and to the world.

Knowing this should help you know what’s appropriate to post and to say to help you get the job you seek.

Here are my few reasons you need to join LinkedIn as students before you graduate;

  1. Build your professional network. It’s never too early to start building a network with people in your career area. Start by linking to classmates who are in your major. While they are friends and classmates now, in the future they become business referrals. Ask your friends who are in LinkedIn to write a recommendation for you. Linking to friends ensure that you will stay connected to them after you graduate. This could be beneficial.
  2. You can follow company movementsWhile it may be a bit forward to directly contact employers, you can follow the companies of recruiters and employers that you are interested in. The majority of companies post regular updates that may be of interest, including graduate jobs. You will also get a clearer sense of how companies are doing, who their competitors are and if/when they are recruiting.
  3. Lasting ConnectionsLinkedIn isn’t just beneficial as a job-seeking platform it’s also great for growing and maintaining a network of contacts as your career progresses. You never know when these contacts will be useful! If you have a look at LinkedIn, you’ll be surprised to find out a large number of professionals who choose to connect here. In fact, you can find your friends, co-workers, colleagues, classmates and family members on this platform. And it’s never a tough job connecting with them all. What’s more, you can even import your email list to find out who among your friends is present on LinkedIn.
  4. Companies look for your serious online:  Most potential employers will put your name through a Google search. Having a LinkedIn profile tells a potential new boss that you are serious about building a career, rather than just socializing online.

In concluding its about time you have to get a LinkedIn Profile to not just help you stay connected with top professionals but also to help you get that job while you maintain a good brand online.
